What $190,000 actually leaves you after tax and rent

I ran a $190,000 salary through 2026 federal and provincial tax, CPP/EI and 12 months of average one-bedroom rent. Edmonton has $116,711 left; Vancouver is 8th at $102,376, within $101 of Ottawa.

Map of what $190,000 leaves after 2026 tax and a year of average 1-bedroom rent in 11 Canadian cities. Edmonton is 1st with $116,711 left per year, Vancouver is 8th with $102,376, and Halifax is last with $95,336, based on Rentals.ca/Urbanation September 2026 rents and 2026 tax rates. Devin's own calculation.

$190K sounds like a lot. Here's what it actually leaves you in Canada's biggest cities.

This started as a post on my social channels. Here's that version, with the ranking and a short note on how I calculated it.

What $190K leaves after tax and rent

I ran a $190,000 salary through 2026 federal + provincial income tax, CPP/EI (QPP/QPIP in Quebec) and 12 months of average 1-bedroom rent:

  1. Edmonton: $116,711 left/yr ($9,726/mo)
  2. Calgary: $113,987
  3. Saskatoon: $112,071
  4. Regina: $112,071
  5. Victoria: $107,008
  6. Winnipeg: $105,972
  7. Ottawa: $102,477
  8. Vancouver: $102,376
  9. Toronto: $99,465
  10. Montreal: $97,337
  11. Halifax: $95,336

The Vancouver surprise

The surprise: Vancouver isn't last. B.C.'s lower tax at this income almost cancels out the highest rent in the country, and Vancouver lands within $101 of Ottawa. Halifax and Montreal finish at the bottom, mostly because of provincial tax.

Vancouver has the priciest rent, but lower B.C. tax keeps it out of the basement.

How I calculated it

These figures are my own calculation. They are approximations, not tax advice.

I used a single filer with $190,000 of employment income and basic credits only. That is one person, a full-year resident of the province, with no dependants and no RRSP or other deductions. Rent is 12 times the September 2026 average 1-bedroom asking rent from the Rentals.ca and Urbanation National Rent Report. Those are asking rents on listings, not CMHC in-place rents. Utilities and renter's insurance are not included.

I would expect the results within about $500 of a commercial calculator.

What this means if you're moving here

Where would you rather earn $190K?

If you're a newcomer relocating to Greater Vancouver, budget from what's left after tax and rent, not from the $190,000 alone. On this list Vancouver is 8th, at $102,376 left for the year, within $101 of Ottawa.

I've lived in Greater Vancouver for 28 years. My guide to relocating to Greater Vancouver walks through neighbourhoods, from Vancouver to the Tri-Cities, BC. If you'd like someone on your side for the rental search, here's how my relocation rental service for tenants works.
